#254 - What Joe Walker's Oscar Win can Teach You

Joe Walker finally wins an Oscar for Best Film Editing.

The exceptionally talented editor has previously been nominated for 2 other Oscars, 4 BAFTAs and 5 ACE Eddie awards (winning one).

But what was interesting to me about his (un-televised) speech was his expression of gratitude to his children:

Getting here, I've had a blast. But my kids, they didn't really have a choice in the matter, they had to come along for the ride, like it or not.

There were a lot of sad farewells in airports, and having to listen to a worm surfacing over and over again, while doing your coursework.

So one thing you may not know: in the hands of a skilled 17 year old, the words 'Oscar Nominated' can be used as an insult.

My daughter once said to me in an argument: 'Well, it's all very well for you, Oscar-nominated Joe Walker!'

So thank you Academy for this upgrade - I need all the help I can get.

Nell, Rose, Anoushka, I love you with all my heart!

Thank you Mary Parent, thank you Legendary, Warner. Thank you to my team, and above all else thank you Denis: 'Merci du fond du coeur!' This is a tribute to you.

Being a working parent leads to trade-offs in all kinds of ways, but it doesn't seem to be something you hear many 'top-tier' editors talking about.

In this issue of Cut/daily I wanted to share a couple of stories on being a parent in Post Production that I hope will put things in perspective.
