#466 – Just show up

The real secret to networking

The other day, I watched a video from an editor talking about his working week in London, and I thought, “This is a valuable lesson for us all!

So this week's issue of Cut/daily is all about networking.

Now, before that word sends shivers down your spine, reframe networking in your mind as simply ‘just showing up’.

Just leave your house, go to an industry event, editor meetup, film screening Q+A or whatever, and just show up.

If you do this, you're already doing more than 95% of other editors out there.

Who knows what might happen?

Where shall we turn?

I made this for you.

Wondering where to look for all these nifty post-production events you should be attending?

Well, I've created a free database of major organisations that host post-production events around the world, and you can use it as a jumping-off point to find the latest in-person and online shindigs you won't want to miss.

Spot something that's missing? Fill in this form and let me know, then we can make it better for everyone.

Share the calendar with your friends and help more editors get out there!

Advice old and new

They used to say:

  • It's not about what you know but who you know.

Now they say:

  • It's not who you know, but who knows you.

So be known for something.

Well, how do you do that?

Nathan Barry (founder of Kit) has “four mantras for creator success,” which are a useful framework for how to start down this path:

  • Share everything you know
  • Create every day
  • Work in public
  • Default to generosity

These are four principles that Editor Jack Brown, AKA The Avid Assistant, is using masterfully. (Intentionally or not.)
