#089 - (HS) - Changing Who Gets to Make Movies

When it comes to movie making there's a certain truth to the saying:

"It's not what you know, it's who you know."

And conversely;

"It's not who you know, it's who knows you."

That makes all the difference when it comes to getting hired, creating opportunities and catching that 'lucky break' you've actually worked for years to secure.

But what I found inspiring about this recent episode of NPR's superb How I Built This podcast is that director Ava DuVernay forged her own path to filmmaking success through the usual mix of tenacity, self-belief and divine intervention.

But she's also used her own success and business acumen to build a platform for other filmmakers to find there way into the industry too.
