“Know your own bad press.”
That was a piece of advice a director once gave me as a young editor, as a way of being able to know where your areas for improvement are.
Thinking about 'our own bad press' here are a few common things editors do that maybe other folk in Production and Post find annoying...
- Retorting “That probably won't work” to any suggestion
- Unilaterally knowing better than Production
- Grumbling about last minute changes
- Saying “We don't have that.”
- Terrible Time Estimation
And therefore you can stand out from the crowd by just not doing them.
