#455 – So I Married a Film Editor, Cut/daily Meets... The Fridmans

Gena and Rebekah Fridman, a marriage of editors.

What's it like to be married to an editor?

I can only imagine it's wall-to-wall wonderful.
– Just ask my wife! (guffaw)
{cue canned laughter}

Anyway.

In this issue of Cut/daily Meets... our ongoing interview series with Post Production's best and brightest, we have the pleasure of learning from two editors who are actually married to each other, Gena and Rebekah Fridman.

Rebekah Fridman has cut numerous episodes of Tell Me Lies, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Atypical, Tiny Beautiful Things and other top-rated shows.

Gena Fridman has also edited Veep, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Atypical, No Good Deed and even The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.

They were both nominated for a Children's and Family Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Editing for a Live Action Single-Camera Program’ as a result of their teamwork* on The Spiderwick Chronicles.

*Nicole Brik, another editor and lifelong friend of both Gena and Rebekah, also worked on the same show. It pays to be friends with editors!

Married to an Editor

Rebekah had this to say about being married to another editor:

“Having a partner who is also an Editor is VERY helpful. We can show each other things, work together/collaborate, and understand the daily needs and disciplines of the job.

Sometimes hours can be long but we understand that and are sympathetic to one another's needs.

He gets it, I get it.”

My favourite thing they had to share?

Watch what’s before and after Action as carefully as the actual scene.

Asking questions and watching editors with different techniques approach a scene has been priceless for me.

Maybe we should run a private Twitch stream to let other editors watch us edit?

This will ruin it for you but I don't want you to miss my hilarious hommage to So I Married An Axe Murderer (not the pinnacle of early 90's comedy, but close to the peak!) as the inspiration for the title of this issue of Cut/daily Meets...

Yeah, so. It's funny.
