#520 - Cut/daily Meets... Editor Mikkel E.G. Nielsen, ACE
Editor Mikkel Nielsen has a calm, collected Danish way about him. I only know two other Danish people but they have the same demeanour.
Maybe it's a national trait? My sample size is too small to extrapolate.
Anyway, I had a lovely chat with him about his refreshingly unhurried approach to editing that rests on remaining curious, playful and extremely well-prepared.
While his methods maybe more unorthodox; working for 10 days straight, then taking 4-5 days off, they obviously deliver the results.
Mikkel has already been nominated for two Oscars, most recently in 2023 for his previous collaboration with writer/director Martin Mcdonagh, The Banshees of Inisherin and winning for The Sound of Metal (2021).
Wild Horse Nine is his latest partnership with Martin and features absolutely stellar performances from John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell. The film is outrageously funny, quietly moving and one that lingers with you for a long time after.
I had no idea what to expect going in but I loved it.
