#424 - Group grading your edit

When you're a Jet, you're a jet all the way...

Today I'll share a simple but effective trick.

You can use it for ‘group grading’ in your NLE, but you can also use it for many other tasks, such as:

  • managing your exports
  • balancing your edit
  • toggling project elements
  • audio mixing
  • creating proxies of timelines
  • and much more.

– Regardless of which NLE you actually use, be sure to watch the FCPX tutorial in this issue, for two fistfuls of ideas for applying this trick to your next edit.

What is group grading?

Group grading is selecting all of the same clips or setups in your timeline as a group, and applying the same adjustment to all those clips at once.

E.g. Selecting all of the closeups or all of the B-cam in one go.

Why does this matter?

It's a huge time-saver!

Instead of manually shift+clicking your way through a complex timeline attempting to nimbly select just the right combination of clips, you can do it in a couple of clicks and do it repeatedly.

How does it work?

Selection by clip colour, baby!
